The economy is not in a good shape. Everyone knows this. We hear about it every day on the news. But how is it affecting small business entrepreneurs across the country?

An article at Businessweek.com suggests that it’s hitting some but for many, it may be a lot of talk and worry without really hitting small businesses yet.

In fact, small businesses that are struggling often realize that it’s a local issue and not a global issue. Take Bisbee, AZ, which sits 90 minutes away from any major highway, is a former mining town, is trying to reinvent itself as a tourist destination.

Sales were down 21% last year in one store, but is this a result of global economic issues, or is it the result of growing pains as the town completely reinvents itself. Gas prices may be influencing the consumer to not drive out of their way to Bisbee.

In Burlingame, California, a high end boutique reports sales down 40% in January and 20% in February. This may be a result of consumer angst, rather than actual loss of funds.

It’s hard to know whether the problems that do exist are more out of worry than real loss of money. But either way, the results can be the same. Whether you see smooth sailing ahead, or a bumpy time, don’t neglect making the essential decisions. Don’t be afraid of email fax and other cost cutting opportunities. You very well may survive the downturn and smart decisions could make the difference.
