Did you know that the modern business man or woman doesn’t need to work at the office? I mean, if they really want to, they’re welcome to. It’s nice to work with people every day. To chat in the lunch room about sports and your favorite TV show. But ultimately, the office has become an option rather than a necessity.

The reason is that we now have technologies that are bringing the entire world together, even though the distances between us remain the same. Two co-workers can communicate totally by email, email fax, and phone. It’s not uncommon for a manager to have his or her entire team working in other states, and even other countries.

Some companies worry that if they allow these kinds of long distance working relationships to occur that they’re productivity will go down. They think that they need to keep everyone together. They think that they need to require strict schedules and dress codes in order to keep everyone working hard.

But the best and brightest work places of the future will be completely results driven. No one’s going to watching your time card. You simply get the job done, keep your job, or your business will move on without you.

This might seem cutthroat but it’s the only option in a world that is growing increasingly free, small, and competitive.
