It used to be that running any business required that you purchase a very large and very expensive copy machine. You had to buy typewriters. You had to send memos. You had to get a land line with a telephone. You had to hire a receptionist.
But my friends, we live in a new age with new possibilities for young entrepreneurs. The opportunities for doing it differently are becoming endless. The simple fact is that you don’t really need an office to run your new small business. All you really need is a small laptop, a free email account through Google, and a good fax to email service. That’s all you need. You’re in business.
Of course, it also helps to have a product that others want to buy, but that’s besides the point.
In terms of actual office supplies, you don’t even really need to buy paper. All of your documents can be digital. Consequently, you won’t need any filing cabinets. You just need a nice documents box on your hard drive.
Pens? Not really. I haven’t written with a pen since 1998.
Post-it’s? Again, I would avoid them. They’re a crutch. Start keeping a good to-do list on a word document.
See tomorrow for some thoughts on how to set up your desktop on your computer.

We live in an era of unprecedented opportunities for women in the business place. It used to be that there were men’s jobs and women’s jobs, and never did the two meet. But now women can do anything and be anything that they want in the business world.
There is one minor glitch to this however. Even though many women want the opportunity to work, many also don’t want to forfeit their right to have a family. Having a child is one of those almost essential elements to the human experience. But how do you work that baby into your meeting schedule? As long as businesses are tied to offices, with office machinery, it will always be hard for women to balance work and family.
But technological innovations are moving right along with social advancement. Now there’s email. There’s conference calling. There’s fax to email.
Businesses are able to offer their employees greater flexibility than ever before. You want to work from home today? No problem. You want to work on your laptop while your daughter is in her dance class? No problem. You want to write emails while you feed your hungry new infant? No problem.
It’s a great time for the liberated woman. The business environment will be better off for this.

I love my laptop. Yesterday I had to go to the doctor’s office during the work day. I have a lot of work to do every day. I didn’t really have time to sit in the waiting room while they prepared for me. So I got a little work done with my lap top.
I love bookstores. I find them to be very relaxing and full of fun things to read and look at. I also like to sit in the local coffee shop at Barnes and Noble and work. It’s relaxing and creatively stimulating to work in a different environment than my office.
Sometimes, I find myself with more work than can be done in a day. This might mean getting a little extra work done at night.
As these examples show, it’s no wonder that I’m the type of worker that would love email fax. I don’t like being confined to my office and I like working in different locations. It’s comforting to me to know that as long as I’ve got an Internet connection, my laptop can become a portable office. I really don’t need anything besides it.
I can log on. I can check my email anywhere. I can even get and send faxes from this small and amazing device.
