The widespread production and use of paper has had a dramatic effect on the modern world. Up until the 19th century, it was relatively expensive to produce. But with the invention of the steam driven paper making machines, paper could be made from wood pulp.
Since that time the vast majority of the modern world has become literate. Education is no longer a aspect of the wealthy and advantaged. It’s become a prerequisite for almost all vocations.
But we’re seeing a new revolution in information that is taking paper out of the equation and bringing info even quicker to the minds of the world.
Now we all view our information on personal compute screens. Information is funneled to us through the Internet. With this adjustment, paper is no longer needed in most office settings, hence the term, going paperless.
Rather than sending memos, businesses make heavy use of email. And rather than using fax machines, which once was the fastest way to send important documents, most documents are sent as pdf file attachments, or sent through fax to email.
Paper is still used for books and magazines. But new inventions are coming that could make intensive reading just as nice on a digital screen as it is with a novel.

Switching to a fax to email service is one important step in going completely paperless. I know that many of you still like to use paper. It might feel good putting pen to a piece of paper on a daily basis. You like the sound of the printer emitting a page that you typed. But managing all of that paper can be just as much work as actually doing the task.
I know that you’ve heard of the benefits of going paperless. And the common response is: “Whatever, I like my paper darn-it. So get off my back!”
But my friends, I promise you that extricating yourself from that pile of papers will be a liberating experience. No more clutter. Imagine what a relief that will be. You’ve got all of your bills, invoices, notes, and documents neatly files away on that little box you call a computer.
But then you might say, “Wade, I still haven’t figured out how to remember to floss. I’m terrible about getting my oil changed every three months. And I’ve added “Go paperless” to my to-do list but I can’t find it under that big heap of paper.”
In essence, going paperless is really about committing to being organized. It’s about agreeing to start filing everything away. Whether it’s on your computer or in a filing cabinet, it takes a certain discipline to file everything in an organized way.
But with the need to go paperless eminent, use this as a call to action to make that personal change.
